Musicians of the King’s Road
Dominique Visse
EXTRAVAGANZA MUSICALI
Things like this do not occur every day
In 1568, a rather important wedding took place in Munich. The festivities went on for some 20 days, and they included a performance of a gigantesque motet for 40 voices. A year earlier, an even bigger composition by the same composer had been performed. However, the composition went later missing for over 400 years until Dominique Visse managed to identify its manuscript in the French National Library.
The music in question is the massive mass, Missa 40/60, by the Italian composer Alessandro Striggio. Together with the motet they form the probably most impressive entity of renaissance polyphony ever written. To perform the works, an exceptionally large ensemble is required, comprising not only choirs of dozens of singers but also several rare historical instruments, such as viols, sackbuts and cornetts.
Musicians of the King’s Road will perform the gigantesque mass and the motet by Alessandro Striggio in an Epiphany concert in Turku Cathedral on Saturday 6 January 2024. The performance will follow the original, historical composition of the ensemble as precisely as possible, using all available artistic forces of the Musicians of the King’s Road. Performing Striggio’s motet and mass in Turku is a remarkable cultural act and, at the same time, the biggest early music project in Finland ever.
The performance is conducted by Dominique Visse, who initially found the manuscript of the mass.
A representative of the Habsburg family, archduchess Sophia von Habsburg-Lothringen, was present at the concert.
